Diabetes Jedi Support Dog Saves Life of Child

Diabetes Rescue Dogs

Volume Seven of The Old Farmer's Almanac for Children featured  this story about Luke and how his diabetes support dog Jedi saved his life :

THE NOSE KNOWS -

Luke, age 7, and his dog, Jedi, are pals, buddies, and best friends. Luke is diabetic, and Jedi is his Diabetic Alert Dog. Jedi is trained to use his nose to detect when Luke’s health is at risk and then alert an adult.
Late one night, Luke was asleep in a bed near his mother. Jedi was also nearby. Without his knowing it, Luke’s blood sugar level dropped—a danger to someone with diabetes. Jedi smelled the change in Luke’s breath and sprang into action. He jumped on and off the bed to wake Luke’s mother. When this didn’t work, he laid his body on top of hers. This woke her up. Then Jedi bowed; that’s his way of saying that Luke’s blood sugar is “low.” Luke’s mother was then able to care for him.

Sky Dog - Movie Review

Love Fantasy Adventure? Perhaps Sky Dog Will Suit You!

Have you watched Sky Dog yet? Sky Dog starts with Josh, a high school senior, finding a dog going through the garbage at an airport after he's been told that he won't be recommended for his flight test. This movie has a scene that brings up a very important issue for pet owners - how they can be vulnerable to coercion when the life of their pet is threatened.
Sometimes people wonder why a person might surrender their pet for adoption. If someone in your life suddenly decides to surrender their beloved pet for no apparent reason, you might want to offer them a safe talk phone line to use such as the Kids Help Phone Line 1-800-668-6868 or the Seniors Safety Line 1-866-299-1011.

Have You Seen These Three Dog Comedies?

Here are three full-length dog comedies you can see for free on YouTube:

Which of these three did you like best?

Dog Comedy - Angel Dog - Review

Free Dog Movie Screenshot shows border collie standing astride a man asleep in bed. The man is wearing a white t-shirt . the closed captioning reads [dog slobbering]
Angel Dog aka Cooper Screenshot

Several things appealed to me right away in this dog comedy description. Here is the description posted by popcornflixx on YouTube.
An uplifting drama with sorrow, sincerity, hope and humour...a journey of recovery for Jake Bryant, a man who has to learn to love and live again after he loses everything that matters to him. His inspiration to get off the sofa and go on living comes from somewhere Jake never would have expected: a lovable stray named Cooper.
While it is not listed as an actual dog comedy, it does say that it is uplifting, and sometimes when you're in pain, you'd rather have an uplifting distraction rather than side-splitting, stitch-splitting laughter. I love that this movie has a stray dog rescuing a person. Quite often rescue dogs actually resue the person that thinks they are rescuing them!

Dog Comedy - Sox: A Family's Best Friend - Review

Screenshot- Sox a Family's Best Friend Shows the older son sharing pizza with Sox the talking dog
Screenshot- Sox a Family's Best Friend

Sox: A Family's Best Friend
stars Aiden Potter and Anton Starkman as two boys newly united into a blended family. They each are having their own personal challenges getting used to being siblings and having a new parent. Enter Sox - a "talking" dog voiced by Steve Snyder who does not move his lips. In the beginning clips, this is a bit off-putting but is explained as being telepathy by Sox to the people he"talks" with. There are the requisite "bad guys" who are trying to capture Sox the dog who talks. One interesting thing I do not recall having seen in Dog comedies at all is the use of black and white versus colour when things are being seen through the eyes of Sox the dog. This was a cute family-friendly movie, that I might like to watch at least one more time.

Lenny the Wonder Dog

A dog implanted with a chip meant to make him incredibly smart is pursued by an evil scientist and his henchmen. posted by Family, there are some scenes that seem intended for the pedophile crowd. There are several dialogues with the dogs that allude to sex. a scene where the male protagonist sees a girl and squirts his drink all over his chest and another scene that would seem to suggest the young boy and girl invest some time together on a couch overnight.

If you enjoy movies with Brechtian style diversions between scenes like ridiculous chase scenes reminiscent of the Monkees from the '60s or cartoon maps to show you where the characters are located between scene changes, you might enjoy the style of this show.

The following synopsis is adapted from Dove::
Kayla is a family film that makes you feel good. It focuses on a young boy who still cannot accept his father’s eight-year-old disappearance and apparent death. He cries out for solace while keeping his mother and well-meaning stepfather at a distance. Then, one day, in the snowy Canadian wilderness, he encounters a wolf that looks exactly like the dog that led his father’s sled team. Despite the hostility of the townspeople, who fear the wolf will devour more of their livestock, the boy bonds with this dog, Kayla, who teaches him about love, loyalty, and self-sacrifice.
Starring Tod Fennell as Sam McKenzie, Henry Czerny as Asa Robinson, Browen Booth as Althea Robinson, and Meredith Henderson as Jaynie Nightingale, the cinematography and costumes are reminiscent of the television series A Wind at My Back.

While you can watch Kayla for free on YouTube, there are several advantages to getting a copy of the DVD. The DVD of Kayla includes the following bonus features:
  • Elizabeth  A. Van Steenwyk: Biography of the Author
  • Kayla's Quebec: Historical Background
  • Thoughts To Be Shared With Friends & Family

Meet cartoonist Glasbergen!

About Randy Glasbergen

Glasbergen began his professional cartooning career at age 15. While still in high school, his cartoons were published regularly in many major magazines, including the Saturday Review, The Wall Street Journal, Kiplinger’s Changing Times, the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, Weight Watchers, Reader's Digest, and New Woman.
After two semesters of journalism studies at Utica College of Syracuse University, he left school to pursue a full-time career as a freelance cartoonist in 1976. Glasbergen's comic panel The Better Half (originated by Bob Barnes in 1956) was syndicated by King Features Syndicate for 32 years, starting in 1982. From 1982 to 1992, Glasbergen did the strip under the pseudonym "Jay Harris," so as not to confuse publishers who were familiar with his different style of humour and character design. ("Harris" was his wife's maiden name.) At the end of syndication, The Better Half was appearing seven days a week in approximately 150 print and online newspapers around the world. With newspapers losing more and more readers to the Internet, Glasbergen retired The Better Half at the end of 2014 to devote more time and energy to his cartoon licensing operation, Glasbergen Cartoon Service.
